In response to a heartbreaking incident in Patiala where a young girl lost her life after consuming a birthday cake ordered from a restaurant, food delivery app Zomato has taken swift action. The company announced the removal of the restaurant, named ‘Cake Kanha’, from its platform and has prohibited the restaurant owner from operating any entities on Zomato in the future.
Reports indicate that the cake not only caused the young girl’s death but also made other family members ill after consumption. This tragic event prompted Zomato to delist the restaurant and extend its support to law enforcement agencies, as the incident is currently under police investigation.
A Zomato spokesperson expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, “We are heartbroken and deeply shaken up by the recent tragic incident that happened in Patiala. As soon as we learnt about the incident, which is now under police investigation, we immediately delisted the restaurant from the Zomato platform. We have also debarred the restaurant owner from operating any entity on Zomato. We are extending our complete support to the law enforcement agencies in the matter.”
Following the incident, police have filed a case under Sections 273 (selling harmful food or drink) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Concerns were raised about the restaurant’s operations, as there was no physical address listed for ‘Cake Kanha’ on the order’s bill copy, leading authorities to suspect that it might be a cloud kitchen. Moreover, discrepancies were found in billing details, with one receipt showing billing from Amritsar instead of Patiala, raising further questions about the establishment’s practices.
