The death toll from viral encephalitis, specifically Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES), has reached 58 in Gujarat, according to a state government report released on Wednesday. The report reveals that of the 140 reported cases of AES, 58 have resulted in fatalities over the past month.
Panchmahal district has emerged as the most severely affected area, with seven deaths, while Ahmedabad Corporation follows with six deaths. The outbreak has been linked primarily to the Chandipura virus (CHPV), a rare and deadly pathogen transmitted by sandflies.
Gujarat’s health commissioner, Harshad Patel, indicated that at least a quarter of the AES-related deaths could be attributed to the Chandipura virus. The virus is known for causing severe neurological symptoms, including high fever, headache, muscle pain, seizures, and, in extreme cases, coma and death. Early detection and prompt treatment are crucial due to the virus’s rapid progression.
As of the latest update, 52 of the 140 suspected cases have been confirmed positive for Chandipura virus across various districts and municipal corporations. Currently, 25 patients remain hospitalized while 57 have been discharged after treatment.
