Former Deputy Prime Minister and prominent Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Lal Krishna Advani was discharged from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) today following a brief hospitalization. The 96-year-old leader was admitted late on Wednesday night to address old age-related health concerns.
A team of specialists from urology, cardiology, and geriatric medicine evaluated Advani during his stay at the old private ward of AIIMS. Sources close to the hospital revealed that he underwent a minor medical procedure during his admission. Confirming his discharge, an AIIMS official stated, “Advani was admitted for old age-related issues and has now been discharged.”
Throughout his career, Advani has been a stalwart figure in Indian politics. Born in Karachi, Pakistan, on November 8, 1927, he began his political journey with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1942. His parliamentary tenure commenced in 1970 with his election to the Rajya Sabha, and he later successfully contested the Lok Sabha elections from New Delhi in 1989.
Advani’s leadership within the BJP has been significant, serving as its president from 1986 to 1990, 1993 to 1998, and again from 2004 to 2005. He played a pivotal role in the party’s growth, notably spearheading the infamous Rath Yatra for Ayodhya’s Ram Temple in the early 1990s. The demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya in December 1992, a controversial incident linked to the yatra, marked a critical moment in Indian political history.
During his extensive parliamentary career spanning nearly three decades, Advani held crucial positions such as Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led NDA government from 1999 to 2004.
Recently, Advani received the prestigious Bharat Ratna award on March 30, 2024, conferred by President Draupadi Murmu in recognition of his contributions to Indian politics.
