The Indian government has granted a one-year extension to Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba beyond his previous tenure, which was scheduled to end on August 30, 2023. As a 1982-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer belonging to the Jharkhand cadre, he has demonstrated exceptional leadership and expertise in various capacities during his distinguished career.
Rajiv Gauba is widely acclaimed for his role as the mastermind behind the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. This historic legislation led to the division of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh. The reorganisation followed the abrogation of Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which granted the region special status.
Throughout his career, Gauba has held several critical positions within the government. Before assuming the role of Cabinet Secretary, he served as Union Home Secretary, overseeing crucial responsibilities such as the management of left-wing extremism division and playing a pivotal role in internal security affairs.
