“Chennai’s ₹4,000-Crore Drain System Prevents Catastrophe Amidst Record Rainfall”

Chennai Spared Catastrophe as ₹4,000-Crore Drain System Averts Disaster

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin lauded the effectiveness of the state’s stormwater drain system, attributing its ₹4,000 crore investment as the savior amid the deluge caused by Cyclone Michaung. As heavy rains lashed Chennai, inundating roads and homes, the CM credited the drainage infrastructure for preventing a potential catastrophe, emphasizing its role in mitigating the impact of record-breaking rainfall.

Stalin highlighted that Chennai encountered rainfall exceeding levels witnessed during the devastating 2015 floods, underscoring the recent 47-year high in precipitation. He emphasized the contrast between the recent natural flooding and the 2015 “man-made floods,” recalling the controversial release of one lakh cusec water from the Chembarambakkam reservoir that exacerbated the crisis six years ago.

The Chief Minister reassured the public, promising full restoration of drinking water within two days and aiming for complete power reinstatement by the following day, despite the current 75% operational status.

In response to the crisis, the state government swiftly initiated precautionary measures ahead of Cyclone Michaung’s landfall, establishing over 61,000 relief camps across Tamil Nadu. Additionally, controlled water release from the Chembarambakkam lake aimed to avert a recurrence of the catastrophic 2015 floods.

However, despite the drainage system’s effectiveness, challenges persist. Restoration efforts are underway in Chennai, with officials diligently assessing the comprehensive loss incurred. Notably, some areas, such as Siruseri, Perumbakkam, and Mudichur, face prolonged power restoration due to deep inundation posing safety concerns, according to a senior official.

The government is seeking ₹5,000 crore in aid from the central government to bolster restoration initiatives. The political landscape echoes contrasting opinions, with the Leader of the Opposition, Edappadi K Palaniswami, expressing concern over Chennai’s predicament despite the significant investment in stormwater drains.

As relief and rehabilitation operations continue, Tamil Nadu remains focused on recovery, evaluating the damages caused by the recent deluge and charting a course toward comprehensive restoration.
