“Chilly Nights, Foggy Mornings in Kashmir Valley”

"Kashmir Braces Amid Dropping Temperatures and Dense Morning Fog"

The chill in Kashmir persists as night temperatures plummet across the valley, causing dense fog that disrupts early morning routines for the second consecutive day. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, experienced a low of minus 3.0 degrees Celsius on Monday night, slightly lower than the previous night’s temperature of minus 2.3 degrees Celsius.

In various parts of Kashmir, including Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Qazigund, Kokernag, and Kupwara, the mercury continued to drop, marking freezing temperatures. Pahalgam, a pivotal base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra, recorded a minimum of minus 4.7 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg, renowned for its ski resorts, registered a low of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius.

The Meteorological Department forecasts predominantly dry weather until the month’s end, contributing to the prevailing cold snap. However, a dense layer of fog blanketing Srinagar city affected daily life yet again, causing reduced visibility and slower traffic movement.

“Visibility in Srinagar at 9:25 am was measured at 91 meters due to the fog cover. Motorists are advised caution due to low visibility,” highlighted an official from the local meteorological office.

Currently immersed in ‘Chilla-i-Kalan,’ the 40-day period characterized by severe winter conditions, Kashmir faces a cold wave, resulting in frozen water bodies like the iconic Dal Lake and water supply disruptions across the valley. This phase, known for its high likelihood of snowfall, is expected to persist until January 31.

Following ‘Chilla-i-Kalan,’ Kashmir will transition into ‘Chilla-i-Khurd,’ a 20-day spell of continued cold, succeeded by ‘Chilla-i-Bachha,’ a 10-day period with milder cold temperatures. The region anticipates ongoing wintry conditions even after the conclusion of ‘Chilla-i-Kalan.’

As the freezing temperatures and dense fog persist, residents are advised to brace for prolonged cold spells and exercise caution, especially during the morning hours when visibility remains significantly reduced across Kashmir.
