A 37-year-old man in Delhi tragically lost his life after falling into a water-filled pothole and sustaining a severe head injury. The incident took place near the red light at Hamdard Hospital on MB Road, police said.
Victim Identified as Rashid Khan
The deceased, identified as Rashid Khan, was found lying unconscious on the road with a deep head wound. According to officials, his motorcycle and helmet were discovered at the accident site. Police received a PCR call on Monday about a person lying injured near the red light, following which officers from Tigri Police Station rushed to the spot. Khan, a resident of Sangam Vihar, was immediately shifted to the AIIMS Trauma Center, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Deep Head Injury Suspected Cause of Death
A senior police officer stated that Khan had a severe injury on his forehead, measuring approximately four inches long and 1.5 inches deep. It is suspected that he fell headfirst into the pothole, lost consciousness, and drowned. However, authorities have noted that the exact cause of death—whether due to the head injury or drowning—will be confirmed only after a postmortem examination.
No CCTV Footage at the Accident Site
Police are investigating the circumstances that led to the accident. Preliminary findings suggest that either a collision with another vehicle caused Khan to fall, or he lost control while attempting to navigate the pothole. Officials suspect he may have been carrying his helmet in his hand while riding at speed, lost balance while braking to avoid sewage-filled water, and ultimately fell into another six-inch-deep water-filled pothole.
The absence of CCTV cameras in the area has made it difficult to determine the exact sequence of events. Investigators are now relying on eyewitness accounts and forensic reports to piece together how the accident occurred.
Civic Concerns Over Road Conditions
This incident highlights the dangers posed by poorly maintained roads and water-filled potholes, especially during the monsoon season. Residents have long voiced concerns about hazardous road conditions in the area, urging authorities to take swift action to prevent further tragedies.
