The Delhi Police has issued a detailed traffic advisory ahead of Muharram processions scheduled for July 16-17, affecting various parts of the city. These processions, part of the observance of Muharram, are expected to commence from several locations including Chhatta Shahzad, Kalan Mahal, and Old Police Chowki, Ashok Basti, passing through significant areas such as Jama Masjid, Chawri Bazar, and Hauz Kazi. The routes will see Tazia processions marking the solemn occasion.
On Tuesday evening, a procession starting from Chhatta Shahzad will traverse Kamra Bangash, Chitli Qabar, and Matia Mahal before culminating at Jama Masjid. Another procession from Old Police Chowki will follow a route via Qutub Road, Khari Baoli, and Lal Kuan, and return along the same path. Additionally, Tazias from Nizamuddin, Okhla, and Mehrauli will proceed directly to Karbala.
Delhi’s bus routes will also be adjusted during this period. Buses heading towards Ajmeri Gate and beyond will be diverted to Aram Bagh, while those destined for New Delhi railway station and Connaught Place will follow alternate routes via Rani Jhansi Road and Sikandra Road respectively.
Meanwhile, in Kerala, the state government has declared a public holiday on Tuesday in observance of Muharram. This decision affects all schools and government offices, aligning with the religious significance of the first month of the Islamic calendar.
Residents and commuters in Delhi are advised to plan their travel accordingly due to expected traffic disruptions on several key roads including Mathura Road, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, and Asaf Ali Road. Traffic regulations will be enforced on major thoroughfares from noon to late evening to facilitate the safe passage of processions.
