A man allegedly driving an SUV in an inebriated state caused chaos in Assam’s Silchar, injuring at least 15 people before being apprehended by the police. The incident has added to the growing number of hit-and-run cases reported across the country in recent months.
According to police officials quoted by PTI, the rampage began near the municipal office, where the SUV hit three pedestrians. The driver then attempted to flee the scene, injuring three more individuals at Capital Point and colliding with several bikes and e-rickshaws at Trunk Road.
As the SUV continued its destructive path, concerned citizens pursued the vehicle on their two-wheelers. The rampage came to an end at Tennis Club Point, where the SUV was forced to stop due to poor road conditions. Police promptly arrived at the scene, taking the driver and the vehicle into custody. Multiple bottles of alcohol were discovered inside the SUV, confirming suspicions of drunk driving.
This incident is part of a disturbing trend of hit-and-run cases across India. Last Sunday, a tragic accident in Mumbai’s BMW area resulted in the death of 45-year-old Kaveri Nakhwa, who was struck by a speeding BMW. The primary suspect, Mihir Shah, has been arrested and confessed to driving the car during the incident. Police reports indicate that Shah was aware that the victim was trapped under one of the tires but continued driving recklessly despite warnings from passing motorists.
Another fatal hit-and-run occurred on May 19 in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar area. Two software engineers riding a bike were killed by a speeding Porsche driven by a minor. The accused was initially sent to an observation home but was later released in June following a habeas corpus petition filed by his paternal aunt.
