"IMD Issues Warning: Heavy Rainfall and Thunderstorms Expected in Odisha Over the Next 48 Hours"

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms in Odisha over the next 48 hours. Senior Scientist of IMD Bhubaneswar, Uma Shankar Das, highlighted that widespread rainfall is expected, along with the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning in parts of North Odisha.

Five districts in Odisha, namely Dhenkanal, Angul, Kalahandi, Boudh, and Kandhamal, have been cautioned about heavy to very heavy rainfall. People have been advised to take safe shelter during lightning and thunderstorms, avoid standing near trees or water bodies, and remain vigilant during this weather event.

The IMD’s official handle on social media reported that Odisha has already experienced heavy to very heavy rainfall, with 13 cm of rain recorded in Naraj and 10 cm in Pipili. The department urged citizens to be aware of the rainy season and prioritize the safety of those around them.

Unfortunately, lightning strikes have claimed 12 lives in Odisha, prompting the state government to announce an ex gratia compensation of ₹4 lakh for the families of each deceased victim.

Additionally, Chhattisgarh is also expected to witness heavy rainfall, and an orange alert has been issued for September 5th. The public is advised to avoid venturing into rain-affected and waterlogged areas during this period.

Telangana and Andhra Pradesh are on high alert as well, with an orange alert indicating the likelihood of heavy rainfall in the next two days. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are similarly under an orange alert for September 3rd and 4th.

Severe thunderstorms, accompanied by moderate rainfall, are anticipated in West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh within the next few hours. The IMD advises residents in these regions to stay informed and exercise caution during adverse weather conditions.
