“Judge from Calcutta High Court Resigns, Joining BJP”

Calcutta High Court Judge Abhijit Gangopadhyay Resigns, Set to Join BJP

In a surprising turn of events, Calcutta High Court Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay has confirmed his resignation and announced his intention to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) shortly. Amid speculation of his potential candidacy in the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls from Bengal’s Tamluk constituency – a stronghold of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) – Justice Gangopadhyay’s decision marks a significant shift in the state’s political landscape.

Speaking to reporters in Kolkata, Justice Gangopadhyay expressed his admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, applauding him as a “very hardworking man”. He also criticized the ruling Trinamool Congress, attributing his decision to enter politics to the alleged corruption within the party, which he claimed was “imploding”.

Justice Gangopadhyay’s move to join the BJP comes amidst speculation that he may contest the Tamluk seat, which has long been held by the TMC. The seat was previously occupied by Suvendu Adhikari, a prominent TMC leader who recently switched allegiance to the BJP, causing a significant stir in West Bengal politics.

Earlier in the day, Justice Gangopadhyay confirmed his resignation, citing a planned meeting with the Chief Justice for a courtesy visit. He also acknowledged having sent his resignation to the President. Despite initial plans for a press conference, he opted to hold it at his home due to prohibitory orders banning large gatherings.

Justice Gangopadhyay’s decision to step down from his judicial position follows his invitation to join politics from Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh. While acknowledging Ghosh’s invitation, Justice Gangopadhyay maintained a neutral stance, stating his appreciation for Ghosh as an individual despite their political differences.

The retired judge has previously courted controversy, notably for an interview regarding a case he was hearing, which drew criticism from the legal fraternity. His frequent headline-making rulings and outspoken remarks have added to his profile, including accusations against a fellow judge and a contentious order for a lawyer’s arrest in the courtroom on contempt charges.

As Justice Gangopadhyay prepares to embark on his political journey with the BJP, his resignation and subsequent entry into the political arena are poised to impact West Bengal’s electoral dynamics and further fuel the ongoing political discourse in the state.
