    Indian Navy's Chetak Helicopter Crashes at Kochi Air Station, One Fatality

    Tragedy struck at the naval air station, INS Garuda, in Kochi, Kerala, as an Indian Navy Chetak helicopter crashed during a routine training flight, claiming the life of one navy official. The incident occurred soon after the helicopter’s lift-off, and the Indian Navy has launched a Board of Inquiry to determine the cause of the accident.

    The fatal crash took place around 2:30 pm during a training flight, leaving the Indian Navy in mourning. Indian Navy Chief Admiral R Hari Kumar and other high-ranking officials paid tribute to the deceased crew member, Yogendra Singh, LAM, and extended their heartfelt condolences to his grieving family, according to a spokesperson for the Indian Navy.

    In a statement, the Indian Navy reported, “The Chetak helicopter met with a ground accident during maintenance taxi checks at INS Garuda, Kochi, resulting in the unfortunate loss of life of one ground crew. A Board of Inquiry has been ordered to investigate the cause of the accident.”

    The INS Garuda, situated adjacent to INS Venduruthy and serving as the headquarters of the Southern Naval Command, is a significant naval air training center and an operational base for the Indian Navy. It features two intersecting runways, allowing for the landing and takeoff of various operational aircraft.

    INS Garuda has been a crucial strategic operating station for the Indian Navy, housing numerous training schools, intelligence centers, maintenance and repair facilities, and experimental stations.

    The incident has highlighted the risks and challenges that naval personnel face during training and maintenance operations. The Indian Navy’s commitment to conducting a thorough inquiry reflects its dedication to safety and the welfare of its personnel.
