“Manisha Padhi: India’s First Female Aide-de-Camp”

"Squadron Leader Manisha Padhi Makes History as India's First Woman Aide-de-Camp"

In a groundbreaking moment, Squadron Leader Manisha Padhi of the Indian Air Force (IAF) has etched her name in history by becoming the first woman in India to assume the prestigious role of Aide-de-Camp (ADC). Appointed by Mizoram Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati, Squadron Leader Padhi’s groundbreaking ascension to this revered position marks a significant milestone for women in the Indian Armed Forces.

The momentous occasion unfolded on November 29 at the Raj Bhawan in Aizawl, the state capital of Mizoram. Governor Kambhampati officially appointed Squadron Leader Padhi as the ADC from the armed forces, making a powerful statement of inclusivity and recognition of women’s capabilities in pivotal roles within the military structure.

Confirming this historic appointment, the Governor’s office in Mizoram released an official statement, affirming, “Squadron Leader Manisha Padhi appointed as Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the Governor of Mizoram. Squadron Leader Manisha is India’s first woman Indian Armed Forces officer to be appointed as Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the Governor of the country.”

Squadron Leader Padhi wasted no time in assuming her responsibilities, formally taking up her post and reporting to the Governor on the same day of her appointment. Her introduction to the officers and staff of the Raj Bhavan in Aizawl was met with a warm welcome, recognizing her historic achievement and embracing her in this new role.

Prior to this groundbreaking appointment, Squadron Leader Padhi served at various distinguished Air Force stations in Bidar, Pune, and Bhatinda, showcasing her dedication and expertise within the Indian Air Force.

The role of Aide-de-Camp is a position of great honor, denoted by the post-nominal letters ADC, conferred upon both current and former aides-de-camp. Typically, service chiefs such as the Army, Navy, and Air Staff have three aides-de-camp each, while the President is supported by five aides-de-camp—three from the Army and one each from the Navy and Air Force. Additionally, an honorary aide-de-camp from the Territorial Army also contributes to this esteemed group.

Squadron Leader Manisha Padhi’s appointment as the first woman ADC stands as a testament to the evolving landscape of inclusivity and recognition of talent within the Indian Armed Forces, setting a trailblazing example for aspiring women in the military sphere.
