In a devastating incident at Cyber Chowk in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur, a speeding Hyundai Santro crashed into multiple bikes, resulting in three fatalities and six injuries. The collision, which occurred this afternoon, shocked witnesses as the chaotic scene unfolded at an intersection devoid of traffic lights.
The driver of the Hyundai Santro, identified as 72-year-old Vasant M Chavan, lost control of the vehicle, plowing into four bikes before colliding with a parked car. Chavan, a retired Pro Vice-Chancellor of Shivaji University Kolhapur, had celebrated his 72nd birthday just two days earlier on June 1.
CCTV footage captured the moment of impact, showing the Santro careening into the two-wheelers and tossing riders and passengers several feet away. Miraculously, a couple on one of the bikes narrowly avoided being hit as the car swerved past them, only to crash into other motorists ahead and eventually hitting a stationary vehicle.
Tragically, Chavan and two others succumbed to their injuries, while six others sustained varying degrees of harm. Post-accident scenes depicted the harrowing aftermath, with individuals rushing to aid the injured, some of whom were flung onto the road by the force of the collision.
Authorities suspect that Chavan might have been unwell, leading to the loss of control over the speeding vehicle. The crash resulted in the Santro colliding with a pole before flipping onto its side, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
Vasant Chavan, a distinguished academician associated with institutions like IIM-Ahmedabad and Bharatiya Vidyapeeth, had a notable career spanning various educational roles. His sudden demise in this tragic incident has left a void in the academic community, with investigations ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash.
