“Om Birla Objects to EU’s Involvement in Manipur Issue, Citing Sovereignty”

India Protests EU's Resolution on Manipur as Interference in Internal Matters

India has lodged a vehement protest against the European Parliament’s resolution condemning certain BJP leaders in the Manipur issue. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla voiced strong objections, characterizing the EU’s actions as unwarranted interference in India’s internal matters.

The European Parliament passed a resolution in July that strongly criticized the “nationalistic rhetoric deployed by leading members of the BJP party” in the context of the Manipur violence. While the resolution called for restraint, political leaders’ cessation of inflammatory statements, and mediation efforts, Om Birla defended India’s sovereignty and emphasized that the internal issues of one nation should not be subject to external discussions.

In a statement issued by the Lok Sabha Secretariat, Birla invited EU Parliament Vice President Nicola Beer to witness India’s general elections scheduled for the next year. He reiterated India’s commitment to maintaining its sovereignty and protested against the European Parliament’s proposal to discuss internal Indian matters.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs has strongly rejected the EU resolutions, stating that the Manipur issue is entirely an internal matter. The ministry’s response underscores that Indian authorities at all levels, including the judiciary, are actively engaged in addressing the situation in Manipur, taking steps to ensure peace, harmony, and law and order.

The ministry further criticized the European Parliament’s involvement, asserting that such interference is unacceptable and reflects a colonial mindset. It urged the European Parliament to focus on its own internal issues and allocate its time more productively.

While the EU’s resolution called on the national and state governments to engage in mediation efforts with all stakeholders for a just settlement that upholds the rights of all communities, India remains firm in its stance that this is a domestic matter, and any external involvement is unwelcome.

The diplomatic standoff between India and the European Union over the Manipur issue highlights the complex dynamics between sovereign nations and the challenges associated with international bodies addressing internal affairs. As the dispute continues, it remains to be seen how both sides will navigate this contentious issue and its implications for their bilateral relations.
