PM Modi Accuses UPA of 'Phone Banking Scam' that Disrupted Banking System

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the previous Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, singling out the ‘phone banking scam’ as one of the biggest scams during their tenure. Speaking at a Rozgaar Mela, where 70,000 appointment letters were being distributed, PM Modi emphasized the significant transformation of public banks from incurring massive losses to registering record profits under the current administration.

The Prime Minister highlighted the remarkable progress made in the digital banking sector, enabling transactions for over 140 crore people. However, he contrasted this with the state of affairs nine years ago when ‘phone banking’ was limited to a select few close to a specific family. During that period, individuals with proximity to certain influential figures could allegedly make calls to banks and secure loans worth thousands of crores, which were never repaid. PM Modi referred to this scheme as the ‘phone banking scam,’ which he believes was one of the major financial scams during the previous government’s rule.

The Rozgaar Mela, a recruitment fair held at 44 locations nationwide, aims to provide job opportunities in various central government departments. Supported by state governments and union territories, the initiative seeks to act as a catalyst in generating employment and empowering the youth for their active participation in national development.

Last year, PM Modi launched the initial phase of the ‘Rozgar Mela’ campaign, pledging to create 10 lakh government jobs. This latest event marks another step towards fulfilling that commitment and offering meaningful opportunities to the country’s youth.

The Prime Minister’s Office, in a statement, highlighted the significance of the Rozgaar Mela in facilitating further employment generation and empowering the youth in contributing to the nation’s development.
