“Revised Counting Date Set for Mizoram Assembly Elections on December 4 by Election Commission”

"Election Commission Shifts Mizoram Assembly Polls Counting to December 4 Following Public Requests"

The Election Commission of India has revised the counting date for the Mizoram assembly polls, rescheduling it from December 3 to December 4, 2023. This change comes in response to various representations received by the Commission, highlighting the special significance of December 3 for the people of Mizoram.

In a statement, the Election Commission acknowledged the multiple appeals received, urging a shift in the counting day from December 3, 2023 (Sunday), to another weekday. The representations emphasized that December 3 holds immense importance for the people of Mizoram, coinciding with significant church programs.

Consequently, considering these requests, the Election Commission has decided to alter the date for the General Election to the Legislative Assembly of Mizoram, moving it from December 3 (Sunday) to December 4, 2023 (Monday).

Initially scheduled alongside other states’ counting—Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Telangana—the Mizoram assembly polls faced appeals from major political parties, civil societies, and other concerned groups to modify the counting date due to its clash with significant church activities.

Addressing this concern, Mizoram’s chief electoral officer, Madhup Vyas, clarified that the counting of votes solely involves designated staff under the EC, not affecting the common populace’s activities on December 3.

The Mizoram assembly elections, conducted on November 7, witnessed enthusiastic participation, with over 80% of the 8.57 lakh voters casting their votes to determine the fate of 174 candidates vying for the 40-member assembly.

The Election Commission’s adjustment of the counting date to December 4 aims to accommodate the requests from various quarters and ensures the smooth conduct of the electoral process in Mizoram, respecting the sentiments and engagements of its citizens.
