Prime Minister Narendra Modi spearheaded India’s stance on climate action at the COP28 climate summit in Dubai, proposing India as a potential host for COP2028 and unveiling a groundbreaking ‘green credit’ initiative aimed at fostering carbon-conscious practices.

Highlighting India’s environmental commitment, PM Modi emphasized the stark contrast between India’s population share (17%) and its global carbon emissions (merely 4%). He affirmed India’s swift progress in achieving its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targets, attaining non-fossil fuel benchmarks nine years ahead of schedule.

Expressing urgency, PM Modi underscored the limited window to rectify historical environmental mistakes, urging nations to diligently pursue and meet their NDC commitments.

The COP, a vital decision-making body under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), witnessed India’s proactive approach to climate challenges. The Indian Environment Ministry introduced initiatives that align with the ‘LiFE’ (Lifestyle for Environment) movement, emphasizing the ‘green credit’ initiative’s encouragement of eco-friendly practices rooted in tradition and conservation.

India’s proactive stance positions it among the few countries on track to fulfill NDCs, aiming to restrict global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. During the summit, PM Modi participated in the opening plenary, emphasizing the importance of a balanced approach between mitigation and adaptation while advocating for a just and inclusive global energy transition.

PM Modi urged affluent nations to facilitate technology transfer to assist developing economies in combating climate change, reinforcing the need for equitable support.

His propositions at COP28 underscore India’s unwavering commitment to global climate action, advocating for collective efforts and a sustainable, balanced approach to address pressing environmental challenges on a global scale.
