Sanjay Roy’s Mother on Verdict: ‘Will Accept Death Penalty if Court Decides’

Sanjay Roy, convicted of the rape and murder of an on-duty medic at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 last year, awaits sentencing, with his family expressing acceptance of the court’s decision, even if it includes capital punishment.

The 70-year-old mother of the convict stated her unwavering support for justice, emphasizing the gravity of the crime. “If the court decides to hang him to death, I don’t have any objection as his crime has been proved in the eyes of the law. I will cry alone but accept it as destiny,” she told reporters.

Roy’s sentencing is scheduled to be announced by a Kolkata court on January 20. Under the charges, he faces a minimum of life imprisonment and a maximum sentence of capital punishment.

The convict’s mother, who has largely avoided media interaction since Roy’s conviction on January 18, revealed her empathy for the victim’s family. “As a woman and a mother of three daughters, I can feel the anguish and pain of the victim’s mother,” she said.

    Family Distances Itself

Roy’s elder sister also echoed the sentiment that justice must prevail. She affirmed the family’s decision not to challenge the court’s ruling, stating, “If he has committed any crime, he should get proper punishment. We have no plans to contest the order in any court.”

The sister, who has been living separately since her marriage in 2007, admitted the family has faced stigma since Roy’s arrest. “Neighbours and relatives pointed fingers at us, saying we are his kin. I hope this clarifies our stance,” she added.

    A Heinous Crime

Roy was found guilty of the heinous crime committed against the medic, a case that shocked the state. His conviction follows months of legal proceedings, with the court’s verdict affirming the evidence against him.

The mother admitted she had not attended the court hearings or visited Roy in custody, explaining, “I would have tried to go if the charges were found to be not true.”

The case has drawn widespread attention, with the impending sentencing poised to set a significant precedent in ensuring justice for crimes of this magnitude.
