Section 144 Enforced in Parts of MP's Shajapur After Religious Procession Stoning

A disturbance in Shajapur, Madhya Pradesh, prompted the imposition of Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) in Magaria, Kachhiwada, and Lalpura areas following an incident involving stone-pelting during a religious procession.

On Monday evening, a group of 7-8 individuals intercepted a procession on Nag-Nagin Road near a mosque around 8:30 pm. The group had been partaking in an evening procession related to the upcoming consecration ceremony of the Ram temple in Ayodhya.

According to an FIR lodged by Mohit Rathore, a participant in the procession, the individuals obstructed their route and congregated, forbidding the continuation of the procession. Subsequently, a confrontation ensued, resulting in the participants being assaulted, including reported instances of stone pelting, physical altercations, and alleged attacks with swords.

The FIR, filed against 24 identified individuals and 15-20 unidentified individuals, details the participants’ claims of being targeted not only on the ground but also from rooftops where stones were allegedly hurled.

In response to the incident, police swiftly registered the FIR and heightened security measures in the affected areas. Shajapur Collector Riju Bafna announced the imposition of Section 144 in the designated regions to maintain peace and order.

Both Ujjain’s divisional commissioner, Sanjay Goyal, and Inspector General Santosh Kumar Singh visited the site after the incident. Additionally, Shajapur MLA Arun Bhimawad advocated for action against the accused, urging immediate intervention by local authorities.

Authorities assure the public of ongoing efforts to address the situation and bring the culprits to justice. As the investigation progresses, vigilance and heightened security remain in place to prevent any escalation and maintain the peace in the affected areas.
