Strong Winds from Snow-Clad Mountains Bring Winter Chill to Delhi

Delhi woke up to a chilly and windy morning on Wednesday as strong winds from snow-clad mountains swept through the national capital. The minimum temperature settled at 11.8 degrees Celsius, 1.6 degrees below the seasonal average, bringing a touch of winter back to the city.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted strong surface winds blowing at speeds between 20 to 30 kmph during the day, which are expected to subside by the afternoon. The impact of these cold winds is likely to persist in Delhi and surrounding areas until March 6, according to private weather forecasting agency Skymet Weather.

“Strong winds from snow-clad mountains will continue over Delhi and other areas until March 6, leading to a winter chill in the capital,” said Mahesh Palawat, Vice President of Meteorology and Climate Change at Skymet Weather, in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

As per IMD data, Delhi recorded a relative humidity of 55% at 8:30 am, while the maximum temperature is expected to reach around 26 degrees Celsius later in the day.

    Delhi’s Air Quality Remains Moderate

Despite the strong winds, Delhi’s air quality remained in the ‘moderate’ category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 108 recorded at 9 pm. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), AQI levels between 101 and 200 are considered ‘moderate’, while anything above 200 falls under the ‘poor’ category.

While residents enjoy the cooler weather, experts suggest keeping warm and staying updated with weather forecasts, as fluctuating temperatures could impact health, especially for the elderly and those with respiratory issues.
