Tamil Superstar Vijay call Citizenship Law as “Unacceptable”

Tamil Superstar Vijay Denounces Citizenship Law as "Unacceptable"

Tamil Nadu, India: Tamil superstar Vijay has voiced strong opposition to the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), branding it as “unacceptable” and urging the Tamil Nadu government to refrain from implementing it within the state. The CAA, which came into effect recently through a gazette notification by the central government, aims to provide citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighboring countries.

In a press release, Vijay, who recently announced the formation of his political party Tamizha Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), condemned the CAA as a product of “divisive politics” that undermines the social harmony within the country. He emphasized the need for the Tamil Nadu government to assure its citizens that the law would not be enforced in the state.

Despite his political debut and the formation of TVK, Vijay declared that his party would not participate in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Instead, he affirmed that TVK’s electoral debut would take place in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly polls.

Vijay’s sentiments were echoed by another prominent South Indian actor, Kamal Haasan, who heads the Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party. Haasan accused the government of attempting to sow division among people and disrupt the unity of India ahead of elections. MNM has been actively opposing the CAA, both legally and politically, and was the first party to challenge its validity in the Supreme Court.

Moreover, Haasan criticized the timing of the CAA notification, suggesting it was strategically issued on the eve of elections while the Supreme Court deliberated on its constitutionality. He emphasized that those seeking to divide citizens based on religion, language, or caste would face consequences in the upcoming elections.

MNM, aligning with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), will participate in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. The alliance’s opposition to the CAA underscores the broader resistance to the law, which selectively grants citizenship to specific religious communities from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, excluding Muslims and Sri Lankan Tamil refugees.

The contentious nature of the CAA has sparked widespread debate and protest across the country, with various political figures and parties taking firm stances against its implementation. As the political landscape continues to evolve, the opposition to the CAA remains a significant point of contention, reflecting broader concerns about inclusivity and communal harmony in India.
