A thief in Neral, Raigad district, experienced a change of heart after realizing he had stolen from the home of the late Narayan Surve, a revered Marathi poet and social activist. Surve’s daughter, Sujata, and her husband, Ganesh Ghare, were away visiting their son when the theft occurred.
The thief, who took advantage of the empty house and made off with items including an LED TV, returned the next day. Upon seeing photographs and memorabilia of Surve, he was overwhelmed with remorse. He decided to return all the stolen items and left a note on the wall, seeking forgiveness for his actions.
Upon their return from Virar, Sujata and Ganesh discovered the note, alerting them to the incident. Police Inspector Shivaji Dhavle from Neral police station confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, focusing on fingerprints found on the stolen TV and other articles.
Narayan Surve, who passed away in 2010 at the age of 84, rose to prominence through his poignant poetry that vividly portrayed the struggles of the urban working class. Before gaining literary fame, Surve himself had a challenging upbringing, having grown up as an orphan on the streets of Mumbai. He worked various jobs including as a domestic help, dishwasher, babysitter, and mill hand, experiences that shaped his perspective and informed his poetic themes glorifying labor and challenging literary norms in Marathi literature.
