A devastating train accident in Bihar has left a trail of sorrow as four people lost their lives and approximately 30 others sustained injuries when the North East Express train derailed near Buxar. Among the victims were Usha Bhandari, a 33-year-old mother, and her eight-year-old daughter Aakriti, hailing from Sadiya in Assam’s Tinsukia district.
The tragic incident occurred around 9:35 pm near the Raghunathpur station, not far from Buxar. The train had departed from Anand Vihar Terminus in Delhi and was en route to Kamakhya near Guwahati in Assam.
The news of the fatal accident was particularly devastating for the family of Usha Bhandari, as her sister shared, “We learned about the sad news at around 6 am today. Our brother-in-law Deepak Bhandari was also traveling with them and is currently under treatment.” The bereaved family and community are now grappling with the sudden loss of their loved ones.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed his “deepest condolences” for the victims and their families, extending his support during this difficult time.
In response to the tragedy, special relief measures have been set in motion to assist the stranded passengers of the derailed North East Express train. A special relief train carrying over 1,000 passengers left Danapur railway station in Bihar at 5 am. Its destination is the Kamakhya railway station in Assam, where it is expected to arrive by 11 pm on Thursday. Notably, approximately 540 of the passengers on this relief train are from Assam, underscoring the urgent need for their safe and timely return home.
The Bihar train accident serves as a stark reminder of the risks and challenges faced in the country’s extensive railway network. Investigations into the incident will likely be conducted to determine the cause of the derailment and to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The loss of lives, particularly the mother and daughter from Assam, is a heart-wrenching event that has left communities in mourning. The support from authorities and the provision of relief measures aim to provide solace to the affected families and ensure the safe return of those still stranded.
