A tragic incident unfolded on Monday afternoon as three young women drowned in the backwaters of the YG Gudda reservoir in Karnataka’s Ramanagara district. The victims—identified as Bhargavi (22), Ramya (20), and Madhu (25), all residents of Electronic City—lost their lives while attempting to wade through the water after a local festival celebration.
According to Magadi police inspector B Basavaraja, a group of seven women had visited the reservoir following a festival and lunch gathering. The women reportedly entered the water to play and cool off but misjudged the depth. One of them became stuck in silt and was unable to free herself. In an attempt to rescue her, two others entered deeper into the water and also got trapped.
“The four other women in the group raised an alarm, but by the time locals responded, the three had already drowned,” said the inspector. Local residents later recovered the bodies and informed the authorities.
The deceased were taken to Magadi Taluk Government Hospital for postmortem examinations. Their bodies were subsequently handed over to their families.
A case of unnatural death has been registered, and an investigation is underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Ramanagara Additional Superintendent of Police Ramachandrappa visited the site along with other senior officers to oversee the initial investigation.
Police have urged residents and visitors to exercise caution around water bodies, especially during the monsoon and festival seasons when water levels and silt conditions can be unpredictable.
