Tensions escalated in Bengaluru as pro-Kannada groups took to the streets, demanding that shop signages predominantly feature the local language, sparking clashes and vandalism in several parts of the city. This uproar comes in the wake of Union Minister Pralhad Joshi’s backing of the demand for increased usage of Kannada in public displays.
Speaking to NDTV, MP Pralhad Joshi voiced his support for using Kannada on shop signages, emphasizing the need for inclusivity, stating, “Not everyone can read English. What is the harm in writing in Kannada as well as in English or another language, like Hindi? This is not England.” Joshi’s stance on promoting regional languages echoed sentiments expressed by pro-Kannada groups, albeit distancing himself from endorsing violence.
The recent rampage by pro-Kannada groups resulted in the vandalism of over 20 shops across prominent areas of Bengaluru, including shopping hubs and even protests at the Kempegowda International Airport. The civic rules mandate that 60% of a signage should be in the vernacular language, yet many shops, particularly in malls, have been disregarding this regulation, sparking frustration among these groups.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who had previously emphasized the importance of learning Kannada for residents of the state, expressed awareness of the day’s events. “We will take action against those who took the law into their own hands and went against the law,” he stated, acknowledging the need for lawful resolution amid the chaos.
BBMP chief Tushar Giri Nath outlined the compliance deadline, indicating that commercial stores under the civic body’s jurisdiction must adhere to the rule by February 28. Failure to do so may result in legal repercussions, including the potential suspension of business licenses.
The clash between the demands for vernacular representation and adherence to civic rules underscores the growing tension regarding language representation in public spaces, highlighting the need for a balanced approach to address the sentiments and obligations within Karnataka’s diverse linguistic landscape.
