    In a groundbreaking find, researchers from the University of Binghamton in the US and the University of Cardiff in Wales have unearthed the world’s oldest forest in a deserted quarry near Cairo, New York. Dating back an astonishing 385 million years, the ancient forest provides a unique glimpse into Earth’s distant past and its role in shaping the planet’s climate.

    While the existence of the ancient forest was previously known, it is now, for the first time, undergoing thorough investigation to unravel the mysteries of the ages of the plants and trees that once thrived there. The fossils discovered in rocks at the site preserve petrified roots, showcasing the ancient trees’ unique reproductive methods.

    The ancient forest, estimated to have covered an expansive area of approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles), played a crucial role in Earth’s environmental history. This process triggered a significant transformation in the planet’s climate, ultimately contributing to the atmospheric conditions we experience today.

    Dr. Christopher Berry, a Paleobotanist from Cardiff University, described the experience of studying the ancient forest, stating, “You are walking through the roots of ancient trees.” The fossils reveal traces of early plants, some of which are believed to have coexisted with dinosaurs, providing valuable insights into Earth’s biodiversity during that era.

    Unlike modern trees that reproduce through seeds, the ancient trees in this forest relied on spores for reproduction. This distinctive method sets them apart from their contemporary counterparts, shedding light on the evolution of plant life over millions of years.

    The cartography of this significant region began half a decade ago, in 2019, and the recent findings highlight the importance of paleobotany, the study of ancient plants, in understanding Earth’s ecological history. The discovery of this ancient forest adds a new chapter to the narrative of Earth’s geological and environmental evolution, showcasing the intricate interplay between plant life and climate over millions of years.
