A video of a woman sarpanch delivering a speech in fluent English at a function in Barmer has gone viral, earning praise from the crowd and IAS officer Tina Dabi, who was the guest of honour at the event. The impressive display of language skills has garnered widespread attention on social media.
Sarpanch Sonu Kanwar, dressed in traditional Rajasthani attire, welcomed District Collector Tina Dabi with an eloquent speech that left the audience and the civil servant astonished. The viral video shows Kanwar confidently addressing the gathering, saying, “I am glad to be part of this day. First of all, I welcome our Collector, Tina ma’am. Being a woman, it’s an honour to welcome Tina ma’am.”
Kanwar’s speech touched upon the important issue of water conservation, a pressing matter in the arid region. Her articulation and command over English received a round of applause from the crowd, as well as from Dabi herself, who was visibly impressed.
Tina Dabi, a 2015 Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exam topper, recently took charge as the District Collector of Barmer. Known for her administrative prowess and public engagements, Dabi has often been in the spotlight since her career began. She previously served as District Collector in Jaisalmer and was posted as the Commissioner of the Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS) in Jaipur before her recent transfer to Barmer.
Her presence at the event further highlighted the importance of women in leadership roles. Dabi’s younger sister, Ria Dabi, also made headlines by securing an all-India rank of 15 in the 2020 UPSC exams.
Dabi’s husband, IAS officer Pradeep Gawande, was also part of a recent administrative reshuffle and is now posted in Jalore.
This viral moment not only showcases the importance of linguistic diversity in rural leadership but also reflects the progress of women in prominent roles across India. Kanwar’s speech has since been shared widely, with many applauding her confidence and message.
