Ashneer Grover, the erstwhile CEO of BharatPe and prominent figure on Shark Tank India, encountered an unexpected hurdle at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. Grover, accompanied by his wife, Madhuri Jain, was prevented from boarding an international flight bound for New York due to a lookout circular issued by Delhi Police’s Economic Offences Wing (EoW).
The EoW’s lookout circular stemmed from an ongoing investigation into alleged financial irregularities, including charges of criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, forgery, and alleged fraudulent activities within BharatPe. This investigation had previously named Grover’s wife and other family members in connection to unexplained payments made to HR firms.
In response to the airport incident, Grover humorously commented on social media, highlighting the surreal nature of being stopped despite having traveled internationally multiple times post the FIR filing in May, with no prior summon or communication from the EoW.
The accusations include the alleged use of backdated invoices to facilitate funds transfer from BharatPe’s accounts to pay commissions for recruitment work via fictitious firms. The reported sums involved are substantial, with Rs 7.6 crore directed to these alleged fake entities, alongside significant amounts supposedly siphoned off through fictitious transactions.
Expressing his determination to weather the storm, Grover asserted his willingness to cooperate with authorities. He now heads CrickPe, a fantasy sports app, and maintains a resilient stance amid mounting scrutiny.
The ongoing legal tussle and investigation pose significant legal ramifications. If found guilty, Grover and the accused could face severe penalties, including a jail term ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment.
