Cold Wave Grips Kashmir: Pahalgam Records Freezing -10.4°C

The cold wave has intensified across Kashmir, with Pahalgam recording a bone-chilling minus 10.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday, the coldest in the Valley this season. The region continues to experience plunging temperatures under clear skies, accompanied by bright sunshine during the day.

    Temperatures Plunge Across the Valley

Officials from the Meteorological Department reported significant drops in minimum temperatures across most parts of the Valley, except for Gulmarg, which witnessed a marginal rise.

    • Srinagar recorded a low of minus 4.4°C, a sharp dip from the previous night’s 1°C.
    • Pahalgam, a popular tourist destination, shivered at minus 10.4°C, down from minus 8.2°C the previous night.
    • Gulmarg, a well-known ski resort, registered minus 9.6°C, slightly up from minus 9.8°C.
    • Qazigund and Konibal in Pampore town logged identical lows of minus 6.2°C.
    • Kupwara in north Kashmir recorded minus 4.6°C, while Kokernag in south Kashmir stood at minus 5.6°C.

    Weather Forecast

The Meteorological Department has predicted mainly dry weather over the next two days, with the possibility of isolated light rain or snow on Saturday. It also warned of further drops in minimum temperatures, with the cold wave likely to persist in the coming days.

    Impact of ‘Chillai-Kalan’

Kashmir is currently enduring ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ the harshest 40-day period of winter that began on December 21. This phase is known for its extreme cold, frequent snowfall, and significant drops in temperatures.

    • ‘Chillai-Kalan’ will conclude on January 30, to be followed by a 20-day period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ (small cold) and a 10-day period called ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold).

    Winter Tourism and Precautions

While the freezing temperatures attract tourists to picturesque spots like Gulmarg and Pahalgam, the cold wave continues to disrupt daily life for residents. Authorities have advised people to take precautions and stay warm as the cold conditions intensify further.

The ongoing harsh weather highlights the importance of preparing for the frigid winter months in the Kashmir Valley, which remains a blend of natural beauty and climatic extremes.
