“International Expertise Mobilized for Urgent Rescue in Uttarakhand Tunnel Collapse”

Rescue Efforts Intensify in Uttarakhand Tunnel Tragedy with International Support

Amidst the ongoing rescue efforts to save 40 laborers trapped in a collapsed tunnel in Uttarakhand, India, special teams from Thailand and Norway, including experts who played a crucial role in the 2018 Thai cave rescue, have been mobilized to aid the operation. Following a landslide and technical challenges, the Indian Air Force is transporting a 25-tonne specialized machine to the site, providing hope for a breakthrough.

The advanced machine, en route from Delhi, can penetrate 4-5 meters of debris per hour and aims to expedite the rescue process. Collaborating with the Thai company that played a key role in the Tham Luang Nang Non cave rescue, Indian authorities seek to leverage their expertise in intricate rescue operations.

The 25-tonne machine, once installed, is expected to initiate work within a few hours of arrival. With a diameter of 900 mm, the rescue pipe associated with the machine is anticipated to reach the trapped laborers in 10-12 hours, offering a potential breakthrough in the challenging rescue mission.

Officials have engaged the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute for insights into effective tunnel operations. Furthermore, suggestions from experts within the Indian Railways and affiliated bodies such as Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES), and Indian Railway Construction International Limited are being considered.

Anshu Manish Khalkho, Director of National Highways & Infrastructure Development, emphasized the safety and well-being of the trapped laborers. He stated, “The labourers are fine, they are getting food, and their families and officials are speaking to them to keep their morale up.”

While expressing concerns about falling debris hindering progress, Khalkho outlined the potential of the specialized machine to push the rescue pipe through the debris, aiming for a swift resolution to the crisis. A backup plan is in place, acknowledging the unpredictable challenges of the rescue operation.

Family members and other laborers, initially expressing frustration over the delay, have reportedly understood the complexities of the situation and are now cooperating with the rescue operation. The collapsed tunnel, part of the Char Dham project, has intensified rescue efforts, with international collaboration providing crucial support.
