Commuters on Kolkata Metro’s Purple Line will soon experience shorter wait times, as metro authorities have announced an increase in services between Joka and Majerhat starting Monday. The frequency of trains will improve significantly, with intervals between trains reduced from 50 minutes to just 22 minutes.
According to metro officials, the total number of daily services on the Joka-Majerhat stretch will rise from the current 18 to 40. The move is aimed at easing passenger movement and better utilizing the operational segment of the Purple Line, which currently runs in isolation from the rest of the Kolkata Metro network.
The Purple Line, situated in the southwestern corridor of the city, is undergoing further extension work. Once completed, it will connect Majerhat to Esplanade, integrating it with the city’s main metro lines—Blue and Green—thus enabling seamless travel across Kolkata.
“The increased frequency will help in improving passenger convenience, especially during peak hours,” said an official from the metro authority. However, the line will continue to remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays until further notice.
With the expansion in operations, the Kolkata Metro aims to enhance the overall efficiency of the Purple Line and accommodate the growing number of daily commuters using this route.
