Tensions escalated in Manipur as armed gunmen, reportedly belonging to the Arambai Tenggol organization, abducted an additional superintendent of police, Amit Singh, in Imphal East district. The incident unfolded on Tuesday evening when around 200 armed miscreants stormed Singh’s residence, vandalizing property and firing gunshots. Prompt action by the Manipur Police and security forces led to Singh’s rescue, although the situation remained tense, necessitating the deployment of the Army.
Singh, posted in the operations wing of the Manipur Police, sustained injuries during the attack and was admitted to a hospital, where his condition is reported to be stable. The gunmen allegedly targeted Singh due to his involvement in the arrest of six individuals linked to vehicle theft, which led to protests and road blockades by Meira Paibis, a Meitei women’s group.
Detailing the harrowing ordeal, Singh’s father, M Kulla, recounted how the armed assailants opened fire indiscriminately, prompting them to seek refuge inside their home. Singh, upon learning of the situation, rushed to the scene with his team but was outnumbered and subsequently abducted.
The Manipur Police swiftly mobilized forces to conduct a rescue operation, ensuring Singh’s safe return within hours. The escalating violence in Manipur since May 3, 2023, has been attributed to tensions between the Meitei and tribal communities over demands for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The Meiteis, the majority population residing in the Imphal Valley, have clashed with tribal groups, including Nagas and Kukis, predominantly inhabiting the hill districts.
The situation remains volatile as authorities grapple with the aftermath of the abduction and ongoing tensions in the region. The involvement of the Army underscores the severity of the situation, with security forces working to restore calm and stability in Manipur amidst escalating violence and unrest.
