Rescue operations in Uttarakhand’s Silkyara have reached a crucial juncture as efforts continue to save 41 workers trapped in a collapsed tunnel. With only 12 meters of rock and debris standing between the rescue team and the stranded workers, officials are racing against the clock, anticipating significant progress by the night.
Mahmood Ahmed, a senior official from Uttarakhand’s Road and Transport Department, reported that the earth drilling machine, active since 12:45 am, has successfully drilled 18 meters so far, marking a crucial advancement in the rescue mission.
Bhaskar Khulbe, Special Officer deputed to the Uttarakhand Tourism Department, expressed optimism, stating, “I am happy to announce we have been able to move forward by another six meters. It is expected that in the next two hours, we will be able to complete the remaining work in this phase.”
Amidst the progress, challenges persist. Mahmood Ahmed highlighted the time-consuming nature of welding pipes, a crucial aspect of creating an escape route for the workers. He explained that despite the swift drilling progress, the welding process requires meticulous attention, accounting for nearly 15 hours to send 18 meters of pipes in three sections.
Rescue endeavors have faced multiple setbacks, including machine breakdowns and falling debris, prolonging the mission’s duration. Authorities remain committed to the operation’s success, leveraging multiple government agencies and deploying various strategies, including vertical drilling for alternative escape routes.
The possibility of rescue remains uncertain, with estimates ranging from 60 hours to 15 days due to technical complexities and challenging terrain. However, efforts have been made to maintain the trapped workers’ well-being, providing food, water, and medicines through smaller drilled holes.
Images captured by an endoscopy camera revealed the workers’ conditions, and recent efforts have supplied them with solid food, marking a positive development in their sustenance.
Despite the challenges, officials are focused on maintaining morale, with families of the trapped workers accommodated nearby to provide support and uplift spirits.
As the rescue operation navigates through difficulties, a sense of urgency persists, emphasizing the critical need for a successful breakthrough to bring the 41 trapped workers to safety.
