“PGI Injection Case: Autopsy Conducted After Patient’s Death, Murder Charges Imminent”

The tragic demise of 25-year-old Harmeet, who received an unknown injection at PGIMER’s gynaecology ward on November 15, has sparked an ongoing investigation, leading to an autopsy conducted a day after her passing. Harmeet fought for her life for 25 days before succumbing to the unknown substance’s effects.

Following the persistent insistence of the patient’s husband, Gurvinder Singh, an autopsy was requested by the investigating officer from Sector 11 police station, with PGIMER forming a medical board comprising specialists from various disciplines, including forensic experts and gynaecologists. The awaited autopsy report is expected to shed light on crucial details regarding the injection administered to Harmeet.

Dr Vipin Kaushal, PGIMER’s medical superintendent, refrained from divulging specific information regarding the toxicology report or the injected substance, citing ongoing police involvement. “The matter is between police and us. We have given all details to them,” Dr Kaushal stated.

Amidst this tragedy, strict protocols have been reinforced at PGIMER, mandating staff adherence to dress codes and heightened vigilance by security personnel following the November 15 incident.

Harmeet’s condition deteriorated rapidly after the injection, leading to her placement on ventilator support from November 19 until her passing on Sunday. Initial reports from PGIMER highlighted complications including acute kidney injury, absent urine output, multi-organ dysfunction, excessive bleeding, severe infection, and prior dialysis upon her admission on November 7.

In a distressing turn, police have registered a murder case against four individuals, including Harmeet’s brother Jasmeet Singh, 22, linking the tragedy to a suspected case of honour killing due to objections to her marriage to Gurvinder based on different castes. The accused, including the female paramedic involved in the injection, were previously in judicial custody for attempted murder and will now face murder charges.

Gurvinder, devastated by the loss of his wife and the upheaval in his life, called for severe punishment for those responsible for what he terms “her murder.” Meanwhile, he has been tending to the newborn his wife delivered on November 3 while undergoing medical treatment in Chandigarh, highlighting the tragic aftermath of this devastating incident.
