“Punjab and Haryana High Court Urges Peaceful Resolution to Farmer Protests”

The Punjab and Haryana High Court, in response to two petitions concerning the ongoing farmer protests, has called for a peaceful settlement and emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order. The court, presided over by Acting Chief Justice GS Sandhawalia and Justice Lapita Banerji, underscored the need for a balanced approach in upholding both the right to protest and the right to free movement for citizens.

Amidst reports of escalating tensions, including the use of tear gas and drones, the court has urged all parties involved to seek a harmonious resolution. It has requested a status report on the protests from the central government, as well as the governments of Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi, highlighting the necessity of addressing the concerns raised by both farmers and the general public.

During Tuesday’s hearing, the bench emphasized that while the right to protest is fundamental, it should not infringe upon the rights of others or disrupt public life. The court acknowledged the farmers’ grievances but stressed the need for protests to be conducted in designated areas to minimize inconvenience to the public.

Two public interest litigations (PILs) have been filed regarding the farmer protests. One petition argued that restricting farmers from reaching Delhi violates their fundamental rights to free movement and peaceful protest, while the other highlighted the inconvenience caused to the public due to blocked highways and disrupted traffic.

In response, the central government expressed its willingness to engage in negotiations with the farmers, particularly regarding their demands for a minimum support price (MSP) law. However, concerns were raised regarding the modification of farmers’ tractors and the potential for violence, necessitating measures to maintain law and order.

The Punjab government affirmed its support for the farmers’ demands and assured adequate arrangements for peaceful protests. Conversely, the Haryana government defended its actions, citing the need to maintain law and order in light of past incidents during protests.

In conclusion, the court emphasized the importance of dialogue and urged all parties to work towards a peaceful resolution. It reiterated the rights of both protesters and the general public, emphasizing the need for mutual respect and understanding. The matter has been adjourned until Thursday, with hopes for a constructive outcome.
