“Sharad Pawar Takes Election Commission’s NCP Decision to Supreme Court”

Sharad Pawar Challenges Election Commission's NCP Recognition, Moves Supreme Court

Renowned political figure Sharad Pawar has taken legal action against the Election Commission’s decision to recognize the faction led by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar as the legitimate Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The veteran leader filed a plea with the Supreme Court challenging the Commission’s order, which was announced on February 6.

The plea, filed by Sharad Pawar in his personal capacity through lawyer Abhishek Jebaraj, seeks to contest the Election Commission’s decision that deemed the Ajit Pawar faction as the authentic representation of the NCP. This move comes in response to the setback faced by Sharad Pawar following the Commission’s ruling, which also assigned the NCP symbol ‘clock’ to the group led by Ajit Pawar.

Before Sharad Pawar’s plea, the Ajit Pawar faction had already taken preemptive legal action by filing a caveat through advocate Abhikalp Pratap Singh. The caveat aimed to prevent any unilateral court order in favor of Sharad Pawar’s group if they decided to approach the Supreme Court.

The Election Commission’s decision to recognize the Ajit Pawar faction as the real NCP was based on a series of tests, including assessments of the party’s constitution, its objectives, and its majority support within the organization and legislative bodies. This verdict dealt a significant blow to Sharad Pawar, who has been a prominent figure in Indian politics for decades.

As the legal battle unfolds, the Supreme Court will now weigh in on the matter, with Sharad Pawar seeking to challenge the Election Commission’s ruling and assert his claim to the leadership of the NCP. The outcome of this legal dispute will have far-reaching implications for the future direction of the NCP and its political standing in Maharashtra and beyond.
