In a significant stride towards bolstering medical education and accessibility to healthcare, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, commonly referred to as KCR, inaugurated nine new government medical colleges across the state. This development marks a remarkable expansion in the state’s healthcare infrastructure, bringing the total number of government medical colleges in Telangana to 26.
Addressing the event through a video conference, Chief Minister KCR underscored the significance of this milestone, highlighting that the state has witnessed a remarkable transformation in its medical education landscape. In 2014, when Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh, the state had only five government medical colleges. Today, with the addition of these nine new institutions, Telangana has taken a major step towards strengthening its healthcare sector.
The official social media account of the Chief Minister’s Office shared, “Telangana’s medical education is reaching a significant milestone,” recognizing the monumental achievement.
What makes this initiative particularly noteworthy is that Telangana has achieved this feat without external financial assistance. The state has funded the establishment of these medical colleges entirely on its own, a testament to its commitment to providing quality healthcare and medical education to its residents.
The nine newly inaugurated government medical colleges are located in Kumrambhim Asifabad, Kamareddy, Khammam, Vikarabad, Jangaon, Rajanna Sirsilla, Nirmal, Jaishankar Bhopalpalli, and Karimnagar. These institutions will contribute to an increase in the number of medical seats, which has risen from 2,850 in 2014 to 8,516 at present.
Chief Minister KCR announced that the commitment to enhancing medical education in Telangana remains unwavering. He revealed plans to open an additional eight government medical colleges next year. This ambitious endeavor aims to ensure that every district in Telangana has access to its government medical college, a milestone that, once achieved, will set the state apart as the first in India to accomplish such widespread healthcare accessibility.
