Dwayne Eduh, a 24-year-old Walmart employee, tragically took his own life after being suspected of fatally shooting two coworkers and injuring another at a Walmart store in Newton County, Georgia. Eduh’s actions sparked a chain of events that ultimately led to his death in South Carolina following a confrontation with law enforcement.
The incident unfolded on Friday at the Covington Walmart supercenter, where Eduh allegedly opened fire, killing 21-year-old Khalaf Barksdale and 19-year-old Akeela Clarke. A third victim, 29-year-old Ryan Bradley, was injured and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was later reported to be in stable condition.
According to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Eduh exited the building briefly before returning with a firearm and targeting his coworkers. In a chilling escalation, Eduh later broke into the home of another coworker, where he shot and killed her as well. The victim’s mother, Samantha Clarke, recounted the harrowing ordeal, detailing how her daughter tried to protect herself by locking the bedroom door before Eduh shot through it.
Eduh fled the scene after the attack, and a manhunt was initiated. Authorities traced Eduh to South Carolina, where officers from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office and South Carolina state troopers confronted him. During the standoff, Eduh reportedly shot himself and was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, according to law enforcement officials.
The Newton County Sheriff’s Office clarified that this was not an “active shooter” situation, stating that Eduh specifically targeted individuals he knew. The motive behind the killings remains unclear, and authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.
Walmart, in response to the tragedy, issued a statement expressing its grief. “There’s no place for violence in our stores. We’re focused on taking care of our associates and supporting law enforcement with their investigation,” a company spokesperson said.
The Covington Walmart was closed at the time of the shooting, and only employees were inside the store. As the investigation continues, an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday in Newberry, South Carolina.
This tragic incident has left the community in shock and mourning as authorities work to uncover the reasons behind this senseless act of violence.
